The well-known Tatra Temple – a unique church of ice with elements of Tatra nature is there this winter again. The model of the winter season of 2016/2017 is designated in the Gothic style of the Spiš region and features a beautiful glass altar. This time, 8 sculptors and 7 helpers used 90 tonnes of ice to create a temple with a unique atmosphere.
The main architect of the Gothic beauty is sculptor Adam Bakoš, altar stained glass was made by glass-maker and designer of Greek-Slovak origin Achilleas Sdoukos.
This year, the artists did not have to go far to get inspired. It was beautiful sacral buildings of the region of Spiš that they found most inspiring. That is why there is the coat of arms of Spiš depicted on the predella of the Gothic wing altar. The back is formed of massive, more than 4-metre-big stained-glass windows. In the centre of the altar case, there is a sculpture of Virgin Mary with crossing little Jesus from the village of Klčov. The altar has four wings, each of them is dedicated to another patron from the region. On the upper left one, there is St. Mary Magdalene from Danišovce, on the lower left one, it is St. Anton the Hermit from Spišská Belá. The upper right wing introduces St. Barbara from Okoličné and the lower right one depicts St. Jacob from Levoča. On the sides of the basilica interior, there are naves of the temple. The left one shows a figure of a shepherd, in the right one, there is a sculpture of Master Paul of Levoča.
This majestic construction, which is unique in the territory of Slovakia, is definitely worth visiting. Get enchanted by precise work and details emphasised by a magical lighting. Enjoy this beauty of ice and fee like in a winter fairytale for a while. The temple offers truly emotional evenings every Sunday – with life music concerts. Spend a beautiful winter in the Tatras and experience something special in the Tatra Temple of Ice.
