The State Forests of the Tatra National Park opened the highest located botanical garden in Slovakia. The High Tatras offer unforgettable moments and magical views also during the summer season. Besides lots of attractions and events, tourists can enjoy the beauty and aroma of Tatra plans on top of Mt. Lomnický štít at the altitude of 2,634 metres.
Thanks to botanists who have been studying rare plants in this place for more than 50 years, we can introduce the highest located botanical garden in Europe at the trail on the summit. Mt. Lomnický štít offers not only beautiful views but also a variety of flora on the very peak where over 100 lichen species, 40 bryophyta species and 1 pteridophyte species have been recorded so far. As for blooming plants, there are 34 species, i.e. almost all plants that occur on ten peaks of the Tatras that rise above the altitude of 2,600 metres. The plants are not only beautiful but also precious. They are relicts (remains of the flora of the last geological era) and 10 species are also endemic (endemic species occur only in a specific location and nowhere else in the world), e.g. the Tatra scurvy-grass (Cochlearia tatrae) grows only in the Tatras.
The so called vegetation cover is of a high significance. These plants have adapted to extreme life conditions at high altitudes and along with lichens and mosses, they solidify the soil, slow down the outflow of rainwater and melting snow and help regulate the moisture regime of the soil. It is thus very important to protect them.
The turn of June and July is the time when most plants are in bloom and visitors can admire them in full beauty. For those who come to Mt. Lomnický štít later, there are pictures of plants at information boards. In this way, one does not miss non-traditional endemic species such as Tatra scurvy-grass (Cochlearia tatrae) and Carpathian saxifrage (Saxifraga caroatica), various lichen and moss species. All of them can resist long winters and short summers and grow on rocks in the Tatras.
One can observe and admire the whole beauty also from an outlook terrace on top of Mt. Lomnický štít. The terrace contains a suspension platform with lattice grate which offers unforgettable views not only around Mt. Lomnický štít and the valley of Malá studená dolina but also on steep rocks beneath – if one is brave enough to look down. The terrace can resist extreme load, strong wind and glaze ice.
Lovers of the Tatras should definitely not miss a visit of the highest located botanical garden in Europe. Built among the clouds, it is accessible with a suspension cable car.
