HISTORY

It is said that Tatranská Lomnica is one of the largest and the most beautiful Tatras villages. It is situated 6 km east of Smokovec on the foothills of  Lomnický Peak.

There have been several owners of this area since 1209. In 1209 Tatranská Lomnica was a subject of the first royal donation of the King Ondrej II. The last private owner of the village was Ondrej Spóner. The area was bought by Hungarians at the times of Austria – Hungary monarchy in 1892 and  the first state spa in the High Tatras as well as a village Tatranská Lomnica were founded there. The Hotel Lomnica, the largest hotel in the High Tatras at that time, was built in 1893. Another facilities including a remarkable Spa House with a swimming pool and water treatment  were built later. The representative Grand Hotel was built in 1905 and in 1919 it acquired a new name – The Grandhotel Praha. A lot of sport fields, ski and sledge track, ice rink and tennis courts were built up.

Between the World wars numerous family pensions and private residencies were built. The biggest modern Morava Recovery Building was founded in 1933. The main tourist attraction of the village, a suspended cable car to Skalnaté Pleso and Lomnický Peak, was built between 1937-1940. Its construction supported building of astronomical and meteorological stations near Skalnaté pleso and on Lomnický Peak.

In the 1960´s and 70´s Tatranská Lomnica became a major centre of recreation for trade union members in Slovakia. Many new hotels (Slovan, Horec), recovery houses (Urán, Odborár, Slovakia, Sasanka, Družba – nowadays Willi) were built there. The World Championship contributed to further development of the village. A new cabin cable car from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnaté pleso was constructed and later it replaced the old one.
Thanks to the world´s meeting of the members of the Association of Camping and Caravanning a new recreational centre with accommodation services was built south of Tatranská Lomnica. Nowadays this facility is known as Eurocamp FICC and it includes a reception building, a bar, bungalows, shops, a sauna and a swimming pool.

Suspension cable car
Tatranská Lomnica - Skalnaté pleso

The operation of  suspended cable car leading from the Grandhotel Praha was stopped after 70 years of its existence. Although the company J&T was truly interested in its reconstruction, the company gave up its intention after some discussion had been made with reputable companies (Poma, Doplmayer...). However,  the company J&T highly contributed to the production of a  documentary film on history of cable cars in the Tatras.  The film´s  first night was on the International festival of mountain films held in Poprad in October 2005.

100 years of golf under the Tatras

The Black Stork golf resort  Veľká Lomnica is situated on the foothills of the High Tatras between villages Veľká and Tatranská Lomnica. The resort continues the golf tradition  in the High Tatras.

Golf was played under the Tatras in 1906 for the first time. At that time Tatranská Lomnica was a favourite place of Hungarian aristocracy which used to spend weekends there. A real golf course with 9 holes was built  and it was supervised by Lauber Dezs in Lomnica between 1908 – 1909. The return of golf to the High Tatras dates back to 1999 when a practice area was open. In the recent years the development of the resort has increased. Today the resort belongs to the sport /relaxing resorts with the most dynamic development.

The first professional golf course with 9 holes was open on August, 20, 2005 and it is a part of the golf resort with 27 holes which is being built. Two courses with 9 holes are at  disposal for the visitors – professional one and practice one, which is suitable for beginners. This course is called Public 9 and it is open from Monday to Thursday also for the players without a green card. The resort includes driving range, putting green and a golf simulator.
