A new 11 million EUR chairlift coming to Štrbské Pleso

Construction begins on a new 8-seater chairlift running to Medvedia kopa.

Štrbské Pleso is one of Slovakia’s most popular ski resorts, and it’s about to get even better. A brand-new 8-seater chairlift is now under construction, bringing a completely new transport solution to the resort and significantly improving access for skiers. “The new chairlift will connect two key areas – it will carry skiers higher than the old drag lift and allow them to ski down from Medvedia kopa either towards the Furkota chairlift or along the Solisko and Turistická pistes.”

With the new chairlift, its adjoining ski runs and snowmaking technology, hundreds of metres of new blue runs will become accessible – ideal for beginners and less experienced skiers.

In addition, the new cableway can transport skiers of all ages and abilities comfortably and safely, something the old drag lift couldn’t always offer. This is the largest investment in the resort infrastructure in the past 15 years.

As far as the biggest benefits are concerned, the connection between existing ski pistes will be considerably improved, without the need to build new ones. At the same time, the new chairlift will ease congestion in the busiest part of the resort and ensure a more even distribution of skiers across the slopes – enhancing both comfort and safety. It will also allow safe transport even in poor weather conditions in the upper sections of the resort, when the Solisko Express cannot operate.

The new chairlift, supplied by Leitner, will completely replace the historic Poma drag lift from 1976, which will be dismantled. The lower station and access routes will be located at the same spot as the existing drag lift lower station. The total investment by TMR amounts to 11€ million.

Special care will be taken to protect the surrounding natural environment during construction. The project will make use of existing clearings, avoiding interference with forested areas, and the new chairlift will reduce noise levels in the vicinity. The design of the lower station is minimalist, with no additional structures, to minimise the impact on the environment. The chairs will be garaged at the lower station when not in operation, without the need for a separate building. The lift will also be equipped with certified bird flight deflectors, the most effective way to prevent bird collisions with the transport system. Removing the old drag lift will reduce both water and electricity consumption, as there will no longer be a need to maintain or snow-cover the track beneath it.
